Pierre-Auguste Renoir's figures seem to merge with one another. His warm, soulful impressionism combines diffuse brushstrokes with super-saturated hues. Classmate of Van Gogh and Alfred Sisley, Renoir was thrust into a cauldron of Impressionist creativity. It was also a time of political conflict and intrigue. During the Paris Commune of 1871, in the wrong place at the wrong time, young Renoir was painting by the Seine when some Communards thought he was a spy. He was nearly thrown into the river, when the Commune leader recognized Renoir as the man who had protected him some time before.
